Dengue rises in Commonwealth Games city

The national capital Delhi is gripped under dengue fever. The toll of dengue patients is reportedly increasing on daily basis giving fear to Delhi's civic bodies to curb it before Commonwealth Games. The month has reported around 800 cases.

WHEN LESS than a month is left for a big event like Commonwealth Games to be hosted in the heart of India, Delhi is already gripped by the scourge of dengue fever. The toll of dengue patients is reportedly increasing on daily basis putting fear among the people and Delhi’s civic bodies, who are rushing to curb it before games. This month has reported around 800 cases. In fact, some of hospitals have denied admitting more patients as they are not able to manage large numbers.

Although MCD is taking every possible step to avoid converting dengue into epidemic, but financial crunch has limited its approach to few areas. Now the precaution remains in the hands of common man, who needs to recognise and identify certain symptoms before raising any alarm about it.

US Open: Federer, Clijsters, Williams and Roddick in 2nd round

THE ROAD to the second round of the US open seemed quite smooth for 16 times Grand Slam winner, Roger Federer. Federer made his way through easily in the first round while his toughest opponent, Robin Soderling was seen struggling against a Grand Slam debutante.

Argentinian hopes were crushed when Brian Dabul lost to FedEx 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Ranked number two in the world, Federer made his seventh consecutive appearance to the US Open with hopes to clinch his 17^th Grand Slam title.

Federer's winning moment was reminiscent to that of the game he played against Novak Djokovic when he played some brilliant between-the-legs shots. Apparently, he had played in the same form when he played against Djokovic during the 2009 US Open.

On his victory, Federer addressed the crowd by saying that he has hit only a few shots like these in his life and to do it twice (play the same format) at the US Open Center Court  was amazing. He further thanked the crowd that applauded him with standing ovation!

Kim Clijsters, who is the defending champion this year also joined the league along with American players Venus Williams and Andy Roddick to enter the second round.

However, things were not as smooth for some other players and a former champion, Lleyton Hewitt of Australia had to sweat it out against the unheralded French player Paul-Henri Mathieu. Hewitt lost to the Frenchman by 6-3 6-4 5-7 4-6 6-1 at the Louis Armstrong stadium.

The player from Down Under won the US Open only once in 2001, when he toppled the then reigning champion, Pete Sampras. On his untimely exit, all he had to say was that he still believes that he had a lot more to improve as a player.

Top five players to set the stadia on fire at US Open on Monday

THE OPENING day of the US Open on Monday will see stalwarts like Kim Clijsters, Roger Federer, Venus Williams and Andy Roddick battling it out at the Arthur Ashe center court. Clijsters will be defending her 2009 US Open title, while men's defending champion Juan Martin del Porto will be missing from action due to injury.

The matches which will be played across 17 courts will see Kim Clijsters taking on Hungarian Greta Arn and Venus Williams pitched against Italian Roberta Vinci in the women's singles. Andy Roddick and Roger Federer will take on France's Stephane Robert and Argentinian Brian Dabul respectively.

Australian Lleyton Hewitt will be battling it out at the Louis Armstrong stadium against France's Paul-Henri Mathieu. India's Sania Mirza will be facing Portugal's Michelle Larcher De Brito.

Roger Federer will not be starting the event as the defending champion as he had lost to Argentina's Juan Martin del Porto during 2009's finals. Del Porto is out from this year's tournament and Federer well be cast against another Argentine Brian Dabul.

Spaniard, Rafael Nadal who is the top seeded and ranked number 1 player in this year's edition of the US Open is yet to clinch a US Open title. So far, his best performance ever at the US Open was during 2008 and 2009. 24-year old Nadal, already has eight major titles which include five French Opens, two Wimbledons and one Australian Open.

If everything goes well, the spectators might be be able to witness another spectacle, that is, watching Federer and Nadal play each other for the first time ever at the US Open although they have faced each other 21 different times at various Grand Slam events.

Marwah Studios team up with Queen's Baton Relay at Kochi

THE CITY of Kochi will have the attention of the nation's sporting fraternity as the XIX Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay makes its way around with receptions at 17 locations here on the National Sports Day on Sunday (August 29).
The baton reached the city on Saturday (August 28), accompanied by a convoy of vehicles and a full fledged multi media team of Marwah Studios, the only official media team of the relay, after an official reception at the Cochin International Airport in Nedumbassery. District Collector M Beena received the torch, after its Lakshadweep leg, from Commander VN Singh who is leading a team of 91 delegates during the baton's journey across the nation.
Olympians TC Yohannan, O Chandrashekharan and Shiny Wilson will receive the baton from the District Collector at the Maharaja's College Stadium at 9am, marking the start of the Kochi leg. Sports Minister M Vijayakumar, Fisheries Minister S Sarma, along with MPs, MLAs, sports officials and athletes will be present at the ceremony.
The Southern Naval Command and the Kochi City Police will accord special receptions to the Queen's Baton relay.
At the Travancore Gate, Southern Naval Command Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Vice Admiral KN Sushil will join the Navy's sportsmen, accompanied by the Navy band, to receive the baton.
Ernakulam range IG B Sandhya, city police commissioner Manoj Abraham and deputy commissioner PH Ashraf will lead the police during the function at high court junction.
In view of the event, security has been tightened, with commandos helping the police, the collector's office has said. “We at Marwah Studios at Noida, keeping full check on our multimedia team,” said Sandeep Marwah, president Marwah studios.

The baton will leave for Thrissur on Monday (August 30).

Commonwealth Games 2010 theme song unveiled by Rahman

MUCH WAITED theme song ‘Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto’ of Commonwealth Games 2010 was unveiled by Grammy and Oscar winning composer AR Rahman at a glittering function in Gurgaon on August 28, 2010. The song calls upon everyone to participate in the October 3 to 14, 2010, mega sporting event in India’s capital New Delhi. Noted choreographer Shyamak Dawar’s troop performed on the beautiful theme song ‘Swagatham’ in a gala ceremony. The theme song was recently cleared by the group of ministers headed by Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy.

Question is -  Will AR Rahman’s theme song for Commonwealth Games be as big a hit as Shakira’s Waka Waka (This time for Africa), the official song of FIFA World Cup football 2010?

First of all both singers have a different way to perform and the lyrics are different. Comparison between international stars is logical. Commonwealth Games theme song is pegged to have two versions with different music wherein most of the lyrics are in Hindi with a touch of English in it while Shakira’s Waka Waka was entirely in English language.

We can’t evaluate Shakira’s killer body, her dancing skills and mind-boggling dance steps with AR Rahman during a concert as they both have different styles.

In my view, the CWG theme song would definitely be something different which the tourists will carry back to their nations. I agree with AR Rahman that the song would go beyond Shakira’s chart buster Waka Waka it will be more complex and difficult to explain. Since, this song has many forms of music and different from western music; it will give great platform to promote Indian music and India as a nation. Let us hope that it will be worth the wait.

Jacob Oram out of Champions League T20 due to Injury

Injury-plagued New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram has been ruled out of next month’s Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa as he is undergoing knee surgery next week.

Oram will not be available for New Zealand Twenty20 champion side Central Districts for the Champions League Twenty20, which starts on September 10 in Johannesburg.

Central Districts had already been hit hard after they lost Ross Taylor to Royal Challengers Bangalore though they got USD 2, 00,000 in exchange.

Oram returned home from Sri Lanka on Wednesday after aggravating his knee injury, which he first suffered during the ODI series against Australia in March, during New Zealand’s training ahead of tri-series match against India.

Oram, whose condition would be assessed by New Zealand medical staff for four to six weeks, is hoping to return for the home series against Pakistan in December.

“While I’m gutted to miss the Champions League with the Stags I’m thankful the medical specialist has found the problem now so we can get the right plans in place to get it right,” Oram said in a statement.

“I’ve been told that I should be realistically targeting the Pakistan homes series at the end of the year, but who knows, if surgery and rehab goes well I may be available for selection before the Indian tour in November.

“It’s frustrating more than anything but I’ve been through this before. I’m confident I can return injury-free following a course of rehabilitation,” Oram said.

US Open draw announced, matches to begin on Monday

THE DRAW for US Open was announced in New York on Thursday. With Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki the top seeds in the upcoming US Open, fourth seed Andy Murray might face tough challenges as the game develops. Although the men's match looks tough, second seed, Roger Federer can be assured of a smooth road till the quarterfinals.

2009 champion, Kim Clijsters, who is the defending champion this year, is seeded number two followed by Venus Williams at number 3. The stakes are equally high for Wozniacki and Clijsters as the former just came out victorious from the Roger's Tournament in Montreal and Clijsters has to defend her title with an injured hip.

As the first round of the draw commences, FedEx will be seen playing opposite Brian Dabul of Argentina. The 26 year old Dabul has an experience of 13 career matches on the tour. The US Open will miss players like Marcos Baghdatis, Mardy Fish, or David Nalbandian.

Soderling, who lost to FedEx in the US Open quarters an year ago, is not in a very good shape. The hard court exits he faced in both Toronto and Cincinnati Open is an example to that.

CLT20 will be a test of professionalism for cricket's dual citizens

What the Indian Premier League started, the Champions League T20 seems bent on completing. First, city loyalties went for a six in the IPL, say when Ishant Sharma played for Kolkata Knight Riders against Delhi Daredevils or when in IPL 1, Zaheer Khan and Robin Uthappa found themselves in 'wrong camps' when Mumbai Indians took on Royal Challengers.

Switch to CLT20 and for city-based clubs, read states, provinces or nations, the prime examples being RCB's trio of Jacques Kallis, Cameron White and Ross Taylor, each of whom could come face to face with their country's champion sides at some stage of the tournament.

Divided by loyalties and united by money wouldn't exactly be the way to describe these worthies. After all, they are professionals and cricket is their livelihood.

And because they are professionals, they will be able to look at their state-mate in the eye and perhaps have a sledge or two to throw at him as well when they clash.

Captains will use to their benefit the extra knowledge these dual citizens provide. "I don't see any issues here," RCB skipper Anil Kumble told TOI. "They are professionals and I am sure there will be no clash of loyalties."

Kumble was confident that he would be able to pick the brains of, say White when they play Victoria Bushrangers or Kallis, when they play the Warriors.

"It happens in the IPL as well. When we play Mumbai, I give my team some extra inputs about Sachin and he does the same about me with his team," explained Kumble. "And yes, you can bet I will be picking the brains of such players that much more."

Actually, in the case of all three - Taylor, Kallis and White - their associations expressed disappointment at having to let them go. But they ultimately chose to honour the players' contracts with the IPL teams.

There will, undoubtedly, be some sort of ribbing from their state-mates when they cross swords. Of course, in a couple of other cases, like that of Mumbai Indians' Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, their task was made simpler when their home team T&T lost in the semis of the Caribbean T20 bash.
That left them to choose between Victoria Bushrangers and South Australian Redbacks respectively, and their IPL teams, which was a no-brainer once MI chose to have them on board.
In that sense, it's certainly easier to decide between two professional engagements rather than have to look at where the heart and perhaps mind is and then think of the money being elsewhere.

The Commonwealth Games village will have food from all over the world. After all for Indians, it is like a grand marriage affair so just have a look at the gastronomical fare waiting for the athletes and officials at the Commonwealth Games Village.

THE STORIES of controversies in Commonwealth Games are not stopping but nation will be happy to see a food menu for the games which is fit in every taste.

Let me introduce you to the yummy menu at the village:

a) Six 6 types of yogurt like soya, natural fat, greek etc.

b) Eight kinds of fresh herbs like basil, parsley, oregano and tarragon

c) One type of smoked fish like smoked salmon

d) Six kinds of deli cold cuts like smoked chicken breast, buffalo salami and chicken ham etc.

e) Up to 12 vegetable crudités like zucchini, celery etc.

f)  Six type of fresh whole fruits like orange, banana, mango, apple etc.

The games central kitchen will run 24x7 and dish out 3,600 meals every day at the main dinning hall.

Apart from that volunteers, workforce and security personnel will get packaged foods at the cost of Rs. 120 for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overall Games motto; Eat, Drink and Play. Save god it will not turn into Eat, Drink and Sleep.

Army to beef up security during Commonwealth Games

The government has decided to rope in the army to ensure foolproof security for the ensuing Commonwealth Games  to be held in Delhi from October 3. Around 1000 personnel of special units from the army are likely to be deployed during the games.

Sources informed that the army personnel are scheduled to be deployed at the venue by September 15. This move will come into effect a little more than a fortnight before the games commence. The Commonwealth Games 2010 are scheduled to begin from October 3.

The deployed personnel will help in providing technical assistance related to intra-force communication, maintenance of jammers, decrypting suspecting signals besides providing other logistical support. Apart from the army, a team from the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) will also be deployed.

The Union Ministry had earlier had sought help from defence minister A K Antony to ensure that the army does not charge the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee for extra facilities provided by the personnel during the games.

On the security front, the army personnel would liaison and help as an extra hand in maintaining security of different vital installations that also includes top hotels and games village where officials from the participating countries will be staying along with the players.

Nearly 175 companies(17,500 personnel) from the Central Paramilitary forces, 3,000 commandos, 100 anti-sabotage teams, 200 dogs and 15 bomb disposal squads will be put in security for the Games.

Some of the venues where the games will be taking place includes 12 main stadia, four non-competition venues such as hotels, six training venues and two other grounds.

Wozniacki, Nadal top seeded at US Open 2010

AFTER SERENA William's exit from the US Open due to an injury, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark has been seeded number one at the Grand Slam tournament for the first time ever on Tuesday. Wozniacki, who was previously ranked number 2 behind Serena by the WTA finished second in the last year's US Open tournament and is the first woman since 2003 to be seeded at the top spot without winning a major tournament.

2009 US Open winner Kim Clijsters, who is the defending champion this year is seeded at number 2 by the U.S Tennis Association. The Association judged the seeding strictly based upon the rankings. The number 3 spot was awarded to 2000-01 champion Venus Williams followed by Jelena Jankovic and French Open runner up Sam Stosur.

Former US Open champions Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova were ranked number 11 and 14 respectively.

With the men's seedings announced on Monday, Rafael Nadal was crowned number 1 followed by Roger Federer. 2009 US Open champion, Juan Martin del Porto withdrew from the 2010 championship as he has not recuperated completely post his operation on the right wrist.

The US Open is one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world and it is played on a hard court. The 2010 championship will see a tough fight between Nadal and Federer, who are vying to stamp their authority in the world of tennis.

Serena Williams to withdraw from US Open due to injury

THREE TIMES champion at the US Open and top seeded women's player, Serena Williams, was forced to pull out of the upcoming US Open because of a foot injury.

Calling the move as one of the devastating moments of her career,  Serena said that it is with much frustration and deep sadness that she is forced to pull out from the US Open as her doctors have advised her against playing so that her foot can heal.

Serena had reportedly cut her right foot at a Munich restaurant. Although, she had undergone a surgery, she was hopeful of being fit ahead of the final major of the season starting a week from the coming Monday.

The last time, Williams was seen playing at the US Open was last year when she lost the semi finals to Kim Clijsters in New York. It was during this match where the infamous episode of threatening the lineswoman took place and she was slapped a record fine.

Other seeded players like Andy Roddick, the 2003 men's champion expressed their surprise that Williams, winner of 13 Grand Slam titles pulled out more than a week before the tournament. Roddick commented by saying that the US Open is probably her (Williams) favourite event (and) so if she's this far out and is not going to play, it’s got to be something pretty serious.

Now, the chances of winning have increased for other players including Serena's older sister Venus Williams. Venus has so far has not won a Grand Slam event apart from Wimbledon since 2001 US Open. But an ailing Venus, who is down with a knee snag had to pull out of tournaments in Mason and Montreal.

Govt clips Kalmadi's wings,committee to oversee Commonwealth Games

CHAIRMAN OF Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Suresh Kalmadi received another jolt  yesterday. In a move to clip his wings, the government has decided to form a committee of senior bureaucrats to look after the preparation of games venues designated for the upcoming mega sporting event. The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in the national capital, New Delhi from October 3, 2010.
Of late government has been receiving flak from many quarters expressing concern over the  readiness of venues and rampaging corruption. The committee of bureaucrats is headed by cabinet secretary, KM Chandrasekhar. The committee has appointed senior bureaucrats of the rank of joint and additional secretaries to administer and oversee the progress of the construction work of different venues.

Each of the bureaucrats has been assigned individual responsibility of one venue/stadium. They have been asked to make sure that all the work related to the preparation of venues completes on time as per the new deadline set for the purpose. These bureaucrats will directly report to the cabinet secretary.         
Sensing the gravity of the situation, the government recently formed a group of ministers to supervise all the work related to CWG. The GoM is headed by Union Minister for Urban Development, Jaipal Reddy. The GoM reports to PMO on all issues related to the preparation of CWG.               
In a recent meeting convened to take stock of the preparation of Commonwealth Games, both prime minister, Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi have said that India’s prestige is at stake and all steps should be taken to ensure its success. Prime minister Singh is also likely to visit some of the venues next week.
The formation of committee of senior bureaucrats by the government is seen by many as a step to clip the wings of Kalmadi further and reduce his clout.  The whistle has already started blowing swiftly. Whether Kalmadi leaves his chair on his own will or will he be sacked is a big question now. Let’s wait and watch.

Rahman all set to release CWG theme song

AFTER A barrage of bad publicity for the much hyped and awaited Commonwealth Games, 2010, there is a sigh of relief as the theme song for the event has been approved by the Empowered Group of Ministers.  
The theme song has been composed by Oscar Award winning music czar, A.R Rahman. The song will be played at the inauguration event scheduled to be held on October 3, 2010. Rahman gave the presentation of the theme song in the capital in front of the GoM headed by senior politician and cabinet minister for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy.

Delhi CM, Shiela Dixit, Sports Minister, M.S Gill, Organising Committee Chairman, Suresh Kalmadi and many senior government officials also attended the meeting. Besides, members of the GoM, the meeting was attended by famous film director, Shyam Benegal and producer, Bharat Bala. It is learnt that the theme song has received approval from the GoM.

Addressing media persons, Reddy said “The Group of Ministers heard a presentation on the theme song by A R Rahman. We discussed the theme song with Shyam Benegal and Bharat Bala, as well as Rahman, and we approved it in principle.” The composition of the song will be made public within ten days, and it will be launched with much fanfare at an event specially conceived for the purpose, music maestro, Rahman said.   

Of late the preparations for the CWG have been making headlines for alleged corruption in various deals. Sensing the gravity of the situation, prime minister, Manmohan Singh has directed all ministries to carry out thorough investigation related to CWG preparation. And it was on his initiative that an empowered GoM was formed to oversee various preparations and to address various other relevant issues. The GoM is reporting to PMO on weekly basis.

Rahman's composition approved as CWG 2010 theme song

AMIDST IRREGULARITIES, allegations of corruption in the upcoming Commonwealth Games, here comes a morale booster. The empowered group of ministers (GoM) has approved ace composer and Oscar winner A.R.Rahman's composition as the official theme song for the CWG. The decision was taken after a meeting that took place on Sunday evening. The song titled as “Swagatham” is tentatively slated to be released in the next 10 days.

The event which is nearly seven weeks away, its implementation and contours were discussed for nearly three hours on Sunday. Amidst speculations, Union Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy made it clear that there will not be any changes in schedule, neither should there be delays in meeting the specified deadlines in the completion and readiness of the stadias in order to host the event that spans for 11 days.

On the composition, he asserted that the theme song was discussed between the GoM, Rahman, Film Director Shyam Benegal and Producer Bharat Bala. The song was approved in principle and will be presented before the public in another 10 days.

With just 48 days for the games to begin and personal request from the Mozart of Madras to portray the games in a positive light, sources say that the idea behind choosing Rahman's composition is to make it a cult song like 'Jai Ho' from Slumdog Millionaire and FIFA's very own anthem, 'Waka Waka'.

Champions League T20 launched

The second edition of the multi-million dollar Champions League Twenty20 was launched here in a glittering function attended by top officials of Cricket South Africa and star players including retired spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan.

CSA president Dr. Nyoka, secretary Gerald Majola and CLT20 CEO Sundar Raman unveiled the glittering trophy at a city hotel on Tuesday night.

South African players Jean-Paul Duminy, Alviro Petersen, Albie Morkel, Wayne Parnell and Makhya Ntini were also present. Mr. Raman said India will continue to be represented in future by three teams while two teams from Australia and South Africa, the two other founder members, will take part.

“We have a 10-year contract with ESPN Star Sports. The number of matches will remain 23 but regarding the increase in number of teams that is the decision of CLT20 council. Three teams from India, two each from South SAfrica and Australia will take part in future tournaments also. The other teams were on invitational basis,” he said.

Subrata Roy calls for balanced coverage of Commonwealth Games

WITH COMMONWEALTH Games coming under flak over the irregularities committed by the Organising Committee, Managing Worker and chairman of Sahara group, Subrata Roy has made an emotional appeal to the media to restrain from slamming the Commonwealth Games until the games are over.

In an emotional appeal to the Indian media, Subrata Roy asked, “Whether for the wrongs of maybe a hundred people, should the hopes and aspirations of 1.2 billion people be crushed?” He further stated, “The immediate need is to create an exceedingly positive environment for the present organizers and genuine workers to make the Games a grand success befitting the great image of our nation.”

Asserting that media had overdone the negative coverage on Commonwealth Games, Roy said, “we must accept that media has already overdone it, causing very big damage in maligning the image of our country. Certainly the media on its parts should not forgive the culprits but it should postpone its campaign until after the successful staging of the Commonwealth Games.”

Making it clear that wrongdoers should not go scot-free, Roy further said that although he did not know as to who were the culprits or how many people misappropriated the money meant for the organisation of the games, but those responsible for pushing back the preparations must be punished.

“The culprits most definitely need to be punished with all their misdeeds thoroughly investigated and all sorts of checks and audits duly conducted by going deep into the matters related to purchase, negotiations and payments etc”, he said, however, adding that all this should be done after the greatest sporting event to be held in the country is over.

The Sahara chairperson in his appeal remarked that the continuous negative coverage of the Commonwealth Games was creating a feeling of withdrawal and detachment among the organisers and volunteers, who were feeling “totally demoralised and dejected.” He went on to say that such kind of negative publicity would cast a shadow on the successful conduct of the games as people will have a bad impression even before the games start.

Roy further said that people in the country and also visitors from abroad, who will come to participate and watch the games  are already stung by the controversy and the need of the hour is to maintain a balanced approach.

It is pertinent to mention here that newspapers and channels are full of headlines and stories putting a question mark over the manner in which the Games are being organised. Allegations referring to kickbacks, nepotism, fake payments have been making the rounds ever since the case of a British company receiving undue benefits was exposed.

The appeal by Subrata Roy assumes special significance as  Sahara group has been closely associated with Indian sports, particularly hockey and cricket.

PGA Championship 2010: Phil Mickelson is favorite for Championship

THE FINAL major of year, the PGA Championship 2010, which is also known as "Glory's Last Shot", contested for the second time at Whistling Straits, started from today August 12 morning. Thick fog delayed the start of the US PGA Championship 2010 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

RTI route should be used to expose Commonwealth Games corruption

IT WAS unreasonable on part of the BJP to get agitated on advice of Union Sports Minister Dr MS Gill, who suggested that RTI route should be taken to get information about the Commonwealth Games 2010. RTI Act is country’s most powerful post-independence Act which has armed even commoners with power that earlier only Parliamentarians possessed. Mindset of BJP leaders in Parliament, it appears makes them feel unprivileged if they use RTI petitions, like these are being used by ordinary people of this country to expose corruption.

RTI Act is a law, which had the fastest rate of awareness amongst common people. It is but natural that Union Sports Ministry and Organizing Committee for Commonwealth Games 2010 might have been flooded with RTI petitions after big exposure of corruption in last some days.

The glittering trophy was unveiled by CSA President Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka, secretary Gerald Majola and CLT20 CEO Sundar Raman.

At the ceremony, CSA President, Dr Nyoka said that South Africa was honoured to be hosting the 2010 Airtel Champions League Twenty20. He further stated that the cricket tournament is coming at the right time. Complementing the country's cricketing culture, CLT20 CEO Sundar Raman that South Africans are a sports loving people and it was encouraging to see the support for CLT20.

The event being a star studded affair included players like Muttiah Muralitharan, Makhaya Ntini (Warriors), JP Duminy (Mumbai Indians), Ryan McLaren (Mumbai Indians), Wayne Parnell (Warriors), Justin Kreush (Warriors), Alviro Petersen (Highveld Lions), Jean Symes (Highveld Lions) and Werner Coetsee (Highveld Lions). The players at the launch started with a coaching clinic at a Johannesburg school where the players shared their knowledge and skills with the upcoming players. The children were visibly excited when they received expert guidance on how to tame the game.

On the participating teams, Sundar Raman said the tournament has a 10 year contract with ESPN Star Sports wherein the number of matches will remain 23 but regarding the increase in number of teams that is the decision of CLT20 council. Three teams from India, two each from South Africa and Australia will take part in future tournaments also. The other teams were on invitational basis.

Commonwealth Games remain embroiled in corruption saga

SURESH KALMADI, Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, today refuted the fresh corruption allegations, which were highlighted in the interim report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). However, despite his rebuttal the games coninue to face serious charges of corruption and it would take a lot of effort to clear the scars.

The corruption allegations surfaced, when the CAG report highlighted massive lapses in the manner the companies were chosen to handle the television and broadcasting rights. One of the companies mentioned in the report was London based Fast Track Sales, which was given the broadcasting rights. An estimated amount of Rs 24 crore was lost in the revenue. It also mentioned that other potential bidders were not concentrated upon while handling out the broadcasting rights to the aforementioned company.

An Australia based company SMAM which was in the news till last week, was hired to rope in international advertisers and sponsors. The CAG report says that apart from SMAM, four other companies had also bidden for the contract but only the former was selected. As reports of corruption surfaced in this segment, Kalmadi allegedly terminated the company on the grounds of “non-performance”. As of now, the sponsorship number is cut to half its original numbers.

For the Queen's Baton Relay in October 2009, the interim report mentioned that the consultant chosen for the ceremony was, strangely, the highest bidder. By using Maxxam International, the report said that Rs 6.16 crore had been wasted. In defence, Kalmadi said that Maxxam had experience in handling the same ceremony for earlier Games. And since the country's prestige was at stake Maxxam International had been chosen to carry out the tasks.
